Vinyl sounds warmer (ha!) and is a great hobby. We at WhimsySpace have started to get more into vinyl much like the rest of the world, and enjoy collecting movie scores and record player art. It's a lot of fun to be able to hold the music in your hands in a way that feels far more real than a digital player.
But how does a recordactually work? Even when we squint it's hard to see the fine detail etched into the vinyl, and what do they even mean? To really get a grasp you'd need to shrink down to the size of the needle you're using to play the record and at that scale you would see a massive variety of grooves and waves cut into the vinyl, a whole new landscape of frozen sound. As the needle moves over these, the record player takes these shapes and translates it back into music we can hear. A record is literally adisc of music captured in a physical medium, and we use science to transform an actual object into intangible sounds once again. A record player is a wonderful mix of science and art!
There's a whole lot more dealing with assorted speeds that records are typically set to. Too fast or slow and you still get the music...but in an amazingly distorted manner! Scary movies where a record plays too slowly, creating and eerie, haunted sound, is a great example. And terrifying. Vinyl is actually quite stable as a material as long as it isn't overheated or scratched, and so some of our clearest, oldest recordings exist on this medium. The only older audio recording is an extremely unique “Phonautograph” which essentially recorded musical vibrations into film, allowing you to see the sound! This is amazing, but much harder to listen to. It took over 100 years for scientists to figure out how to listen to this music once more, bringing the worlds first audio recording back to life.
But when listening to records yourself, make sure to set your record player to the right speed! Too quickly and your record may end up like this guy, spinning faster than he ever thought possible! Amuse your friends and family with a record that went on a wild ride, with this record player art spinning at 78rpm!
